Advent 2023

Day 5 – Play-Acting

One Christmas the adults decided to use us kids (me, my sister, and my two cousins) as the cast of colorful characters for “The Bible.” They rented a video camera, made costumes, wrote scripts, and then we filmed several stories, including, Adam and Eve, Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and of course, Mary and Joseph, and the birth of Jesus.
It got late and the kids went to bed… except me. The adults decided to do some acting as well! Esther, Mary and Joseph. I sat and watched the adults acting like kids again. They had all the wonderment of children that night.
It was just a fun time as a kid, but as I got older and watched and rewatched the video recording, I realized just how impactful an experience it was. It has shaped how I view certain Bible stories, through the lens of play-acting them out. Those stories will always be just a bit more meaningful to me.
That experience made me realize that Jesus is in every story! The wonder of Jesus is that he is everything, everywhere, every time. We can see him in every story, his hand at work throughout our lives. Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth, but it’s also much more. His birth is just the beginning of the life that he lived and gave up in death, for all of us. I stand in wonder at the life of Jesus and his loving sacrifice for us.

Jenn Quach loves Christmas; it’s her favorite time of year! She is a wife, a mother, and a nurse. She enjoys spreading Christmas cheer every chance she gets.
