Advent 11 – David

David, the youngest son of Jesse, shows us that God looks at our heart and not our outer appearance (1 Samuel 16:7).
When David was anointed, he was young, with many dreams and ambitions, yet he learned to fully trust God and the plans God had for his life. Moreover, as a shepherd, he not only was responsible and caring, but even willing to defend his flock with his own life: talk about courage! (1 Samuel 17:34-37).
When the giant, Goliath, openly taunted and mocked the armies of Israel while defaming the name of God, David stepped forward to face Goliath. Not only did he kill Goliath, but again he showed his complete trust in God.
After many years, when David reigned as king, it is surprising to see his reaction toward evil (2 Samuel 12:5-6). He is confronted with one of the worst moments of his life when the prophet Nathan proclaims him a murderer and an adulterer. As king, he could have had the prophet Nathan killed for openly reprimanding him (2 Samuel 12:13,16). Instead, he went to his room to pray for forgiveness, with humility and remorse for what he had done.
The life of David is an example of how God is MERCIFUL AND UNDERSTANDING (Psalm 51:3-6), not outright condemning us when we sin, but instead showering us with grace, love and forgiveness. What a great God we have!
Furthermore, it shows that when we are faced with “giants” in our lives, with the impossible and insurmountable, we can trust that God is in control of our lives and that nothing is impossible for Him. Remember that nothing can stand against Him and that He is always for you and loves you so much; praise be to God!
