BECOMING A MEMBER

LA SIERRA UNIVERSITY CHURCH

Membership at La Sierra

We’re thrilled you’re thinking about becoming a member at the La Sierra University Church! While anyone is always welcome to attend and participate fully in our worship life, membership is an intentional step in the faith journey the signals your commitment to following Jesus within the context of a particular congregation—what we sometimes call a “local expression of the Body of Christ.”

There are three ways of becoming a member, described below. Whichever route applies to you, we hope’ll you join this community as you sense the time is right. And we’re eager to help you get settled and integrated into this large, diverse congregation.

If talking with a pastor would help you in your discernment, send us a quick note. So glad you’re here!

Membership Class

Periodically, we offer six-week group classes that are an introduction to Adventist Christian faith, practices, and beliefs. These classes are a great start to your journey towards baptism, profession of faith, or just a refresher for new members at La Sierra. The classes meet in the Fall and Spring on Saturday mornings during the Bible Study time (10:00am to 11:00am). Watch for announcements about the next membership class.

Baptism

As Christians, we practice baptism as an enactment of our desire to follow Jesus, and to participate symbolically in his life, death, and resurrection. Baptism also marks our commitment to participate in the Body of Christ, which is the church community, as well as our commitment to serve the world that God loves. At the time of your baptism, the congregation will officially welcome you as a member of La Sierra and the Seventh-day Adventist denomination.

Profession of Faith

Profession of Faith is one of the ways to become a member of the La Sierra University Church and the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. It usually involves a brief introduction of the new member to the congregation by a pastor in a worship service.

Membership on Profession of Faith is available under any of the following circumstances:

1. You are already a Christian who has been baptized by immersion in another Christian communion, and you now wish to join the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

2. You are a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church who is unable to secure a letter of transfer from his/her home church for logistical reasons, lack of response to a transfer request, or misplaced record of membership.

Membership Transfer

If you are a member in another Seventh-day Adventist congregation and you would like to make La Sierra your home church, you can request a membership transfer through our church office. Our office initiates the request, and your previous congregation confirms your membership and grants the transfer. Sometimes it is difficult to make contact with your previous church, in which case Profession of Faith may become an option for membership here (see #2 under Profession of Faith above).
